Anne Burnell – Vocalist
Singer-songwriter Anne Burnell has been praised as “a singer of glorious gifts,” by the Chicago Tribune and “a fluid, silken voice navigates the various scales with remarkable agility and delightful phrasing” by Chicago Jazz Magazine.
Jonathan Widran, from Jazziz Magazine, called her “one of Chicago’s most versatile live performers,” Anne performs at jazz clubs, concert halls, and festivals in Chicago, throughout the Midwest, as well as Pittsburgh and New York City. From Park West, Auditorium Theatre, University of Chicago’s Jazz at the Logan, to sold-out shows at Andy’s Jazz Club and Davenport’s, to five years at the Taste of Chicago, Anne is one of Chicago’s premier and in-demand female vocalists. Anne has released two duo CDs with her husband /pianist Mark Burnell and four solo albums. Their first duo album, LITTLE THINGS WE DO TOGETHER resulted in being named “One of the Year’s Ten Best,” by After Dark Chicago. Anne’s acclaimed album BLUES IN THE NIGHT, a centennial tribute to composer Harold Arlen, featured arrangements by Count Basie Band veteran Bob Ojeda. It garnered worldwide airplay on jazz radio and NPR stations in the major markets and hit the Top Ten on the CMJ charts.
Mark Burnell – Pianist/Vocalist
Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as “silky smooth and highly polished” and New York’s Cabaret Hotline, as “one of the most talented pianists and arrangers I’ve seen,” Mark Burnell has worked with Dave Frishberg, Richie Cole, Louie Belson, Connie Francis, Howie Mandel, Ward Swingle, Laurel Masse, Laura San Giacomo, Rob Marshall, Blair Underwood, and Seth Meyers.
Mark’s overseas tours have taken him to Amsterdam, Bern, Zurich, Paris, Geneva, Lausanne, Freiburg, St. Croix, and Panama. In 2009 and 2010, he was an instructor at the International Cabaret Conference at Yale. Mark also taught jazz at Northwestern and Roosevelt Universities, trained vocalists for 10 years at Carnegie Mellon University, received his MFA and BFA and directed the CMU Jazz Choir.
One of Chicago’s most in-demand pianists/vocalists/music directors, Mark leads a jazz trio on Saturdays at the Tortoise Supper Club. He can also be heard at Davenport’s, Drew’s on Halsted, Hey Nonny, Skokie Theatre, Le Piano, and the Signature Room.
