Readers may be familiar with the trendy crystal bowls (known as “singing bowls”) that promote deep relaxation through vibrations and sound, but the practice of using sound healing has been used for centuries in various cultures and traditions, and is gaining popularity in modern times as a complementary therapy for stress reduction, pain management, and emotional healing.

Ask Sarasota resident and sound healing facilitator, Kelly Kelita, owner of Mystical Oasis Sound Healing & Yoga Studio, and she’ll tell you that Sarasotans are flocking to her studio in droves to experience her gift of incorporating singing bowls, gongs, drums, chimes, or tuning forks to produce sound waves that can penetrate deep into the body and stimulate the natural healing processes. The vibrations from the sound can help release tension and blockages in the body, restore balance to the energy centers, and promote a sense of calm and relaxation. Many of her clients include firefighters, law enforcement officers, healthcare practitioners, cancer victims, PTSD sufferers and others who seek alternative health practices to find a balance in body, mind and spirit.

Kelita’s story is inspiring. Growing up as a young girl, she always sensed she had “music in my blood,” and was mentored by a physical education teacher in parochial school to explore brain wave therapy as it relates to “bineural beats” and energy work, finding that studies have proven they affect everything from extreme stress disorder, anxiety attacks, to depression. Fast forward to 2018 and life changes took her to Sarasota from Yonkers, New York, and she started a small studio from her Sarasota home with a set of Tibetan bowls, crystal bowls, gongs, chimes and some other percussion instruments she used in therapy with private clients. Her business continued to grow and with that came a move to a large studio space in Bradenton that she transformed into a Mystical Oasis (hence the name) that is magical, calming, soothing and immediately puts visitors into a zen-like frame of mind.

Suspended from the ceiling are 10 aerial hammocks used in some of her classes where clients “Cocoon” themselves while she facilitates  a variety of different themed classes that utilize all of the sound instruments she’s invested in. Classes include: Floating in the Sea; Ultimate Bliss; Relax & Align; Balance & Restore; Floating Forest; Full Moon Float, as well as a seperate room for those who want to experience the wildly popular therapeutic effects of the “crystal bed” -incorporating crystal light therapy, a form of alternative therapy that involves using crystals or gemstones to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual healing.

“All my therapies promotes relaxation,” says Kelita, “But the crystal light bed promotes relaxation and reduces stress. The crystals and the light used in this therapy can help calm the mind and reduce anxiety.”

According to numerous health articles, crystal therapies and sound therapy (or sound baths) is considered a complementary healthcare practice, enhancing and stimulating the mind and body’s ability to heal. “You experience sound therapy via a sound bath —being ‘bathed’ in acoustic sound frequencies and vibrations using instruments such as gongs, Tibetan bowls, crystal singing bowls, and chimes that fill a space creating a deeply sensory sound experience that will result in a deep state of relaxation,” says Kelita.

Crystal Light Bed and the use of crystals during the therapy session can help balance and realign your energy centers, known as chakras and can help improve the flow of energy throughout your body. While crystal light therapy is known to boost the immune system, some proponents of crystal light bed therapy claim that it can help stimulate the immune system, which can help the body fight off illness and disease. It is especially effective to reduce pain and inflammation. This may be due to the balancing effects of the therapy on the body’s energy system. It is believed that crystal light bed therapy also helps enhance spiritual growth and connect you to your higher self, promoting feelings of inner peace and harmony.

Here are several other potential benefits to also using sound healing, including:

“Overall, sound healing is a non-invasive and holistic approach to promoting health and well-being that can be beneficial for a wide range of individuals,” says Kelita.

Aerial hammock therapy, also known as aerial yoga or anti-gravity yoga, is a type of yoga that involves using a hammock suspended from the ceiling to support and deepen traditional yoga poses. Among other therapeutic benefits,  Aerial hammock therapy can help improve your flexibility by allowing you to move more freely and deeply into poses without putting stress on your joints. It also provides spinal decompression: Inverted poses in aerial hammock therapy can help decompress the spine and relieve pressure on the vertebrae. This can help alleviate back pain and improve spinal health.
