Queerness was and sometimes still is considered “un-natural.” Queer gardening challenges this “un-naturalness” by creating queer-feminist ecologies.

Our documentary examines what horticultures look like when binaries such as nature/culture, human/more-than-human and body/environment are deconstructed in creative ways.

Ella von der Haide collected 18 interviews with LGBTQIA*-gardeners about their relationships with plants and the land. These conversations take place in a variety of gardens, from urban vegetable production in Oakland to a community space garden in NYC, from a project to care for indigenous native apple trees in British Columbia to a reforestation project in Tennessee.

Queer gardening experiences are “composted” into songs, dance, literature and plant-tattoos. The intimate atmosphere of the interviews allows glimpses of the role gardening plays for queer gardeners as a resource, a form of resistance and as places of world-making through alternative queer narratives, spiritualities and grieving rituals.

The film also reflects the ambiguity of gardens. While they can be places of healing, land use is never innocent, but rather is embedded in the violent colonial history of agriculture and the extinction of plants, insects and animals. Questions of how to decolonize horticulture, how to eradicate racism in the environmental movements and the re-appropriation of spiritualties are discussed.

With her documentary, Ella von der Haide contributes to the emerging discourse about queer ecologies. The film is an unfinished puzzle that prompts you to continue playing with it.
Director Biography – Ella von der Haide
Ella von der Haide, born1974, is a passionate film maker from Germany. After her Dipl.-Ing. degree for Urban and Regional Planning, she went several times to USA, Canada and around the globe as a community gardener/filmmaker. Since 2004 she works as a media artist. Her many researches, lectureships, documentaries, books and stage plays evolve around the topics of feminism, ecology, decolonialism, LGBTQ+ and socio-ecological activisms. Her latest documentary series give a voice to her hope “Another world is plantable“. (Awarded with the Förderpreis für Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen der Louisoder Umweltstiftung).
Director Statement
With my documentary I want to answer the question of how we can join the efforts of social and ecological activism. I show how queer-feminist and intersectional ecologies are reshaping the conservative and colonial history of the ecological movement.
Queer gardening is adding a new perspective to the queer movement beyond identity politics and partying.

Shakespeare returns to Bay Preserve!

Join us for a Midsummer’s Day celebration filled with mischief, confusion, and love as Asolo Rep On Tour brings Shakespeare’s beloved comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, to Bay Preserve on Sunday, October 8.

Gates open at 3:30 pm and the program begins promptly at 4:00 pm. Those arriving before 3:30 pm will be asked to wait at the main gate for Bay Preserve. The park will not open to the public before this time.

Please park at the First Baptist Church Osprey and enjoy a short trolley ride to Bay Preserve. Pick up for the trolley is at the First Baptist Church. We will have 2 trolleys running for efficient service.

The pavilion at Bay Preserve is a perfect setting for this outdoor performance. We encourage you to bring your favorite picnic blanket or beach chairs. We will have a limited supply of chairs and blankets available as well for your convenience.

PLEASE REVIEW:
We will have iced tea available and water – please bring your own refillable container as all we will have is plastic cups. We do not provide soda.
NOTE: If you have your own personal mess kits please feel free to bring to save on waste produced from all the paper goods. Not a Clue is “Going Green” All campers will are asked to bring their own mess kits to camp.

Community campfire activities will include smores or other treats and stories around the fire and possibly a night hike.

Facility Rules:
• Pets are not recommended – call for information
The speed limit on the property is 5 mph, please be respectful and stay alert as there are many animals in the area. Call if you plan to arrive after 4 pm as the Pioneer Area that we will be touring closes at 5 pm
Check-in time for campsites is 11:00 a.m., and check-out time is 2:00 p.m. Quiet time is 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.

What Campers should bring with them
Lawn/ Camp Chair
Flash Lights, headlamps
Changes of Clothes/shoes (long pants recommended – lots of poison ivy)
Towels and toiletries (toothbrush, soap, Wet Ones, etc)
Extra jacket and sweater – always best to dress in layers
You should wear closed-toe shoes – flip flops are not recommended except around camp and not around the firepit (we do have poison ivy around edges of the property)
Sleeping bag – extra blanket suggested!!!– pillow
Bug Spray, Sun Block
Sm cooler with ice for specialty drinks/meds/picky eaters
A separate bag for dirty clothes
Bicycles, yard toys, balls, Frisbees, book, etc
Camera, batteries
*If you want some cushion to sleep on bring a blow-up pool raft under your sleeping bag. Please note that if you are bringing an air mattress, it does get cooler in the evening, please place a blanket under your sleeping bag or sheets as well. The air in the space between you and the ground will be colder than if you slept on the ground.
PLEASE NOTE: NO FOOD OR DRINKS OTHER THAN WATER ARE PERMITTED IN THE TENTS PROVIDED BY NOT A CLUE ADVENTURES AT ANY TIME. We also ask that if your child brings an electronic device it only be used after they turn in for the night.
