Check out Dr. Emily Hall and Jim Culter’s lecture on Jan. 16 to learn more about Mote scientists embarking on journeys to the “deep” to explore blue holes. Blue holes are underwater sinkholes, similar to sinkholes on land. They vary in size, shape and depth, but most are ecological hot spots.

Stop by for Dr. Richard Pierce and Dr. Cynthia Heil’s lecture on Jan. 23 about Florida Red Tide which causes severe negative impacts on the environment, economies and human health along Florida’s west coast, and periodically the Atlantic coast. As a result of the severe 2018-2019 Red Tide, The Florida Legislature and Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission initiated the 6-year Red Tide Mitigation and Technology Development Initiative. This Initiative provides funding for Mote scientists to partner with other institutions and companies to conduct extensive laboratory and field research on the efficacy of a variety of potential products and technologies to mitigate the adverse effects of Red Tide.

Or join us on Jan. 30 for Dr. Nicole Rhody’s lecture on aquaculture which is currently the fastest-growing food production sector globally and a sustainable option for attaining food security. Sustainable aquaculture methods can protect our oceans and help meet the increasing demand for seafood. Come discover the new and innovative ways Mote’s Aquaculture Research Scientists are working to ensure global access to healthy and sustainable protein options.
