Opera and Dance: An Uneasy Marriage

Joy McIntyre leads us through the evolution of dance in opera, highlighting some favorite dance scenes in opera.

From its Baroque beginnings, opera and dance thrived in a loving embrace, each enhancing the other. Both art forms eventually went on separate journeys, but never quite lost sight of each other. As opera forms evolved, composers were, by definition, focused on the glory and compass of the human voice. Yet, many opera still contain delicious moments of dance that are often overlooked. We will look at a few favorites.
