Rachmaninoff – Piano Concerto No. 2
Brahms – Symphony No. 1
2 hours. Includes intermission.
Rachmaninoff dedicated his Second Piano Concerto to the therapist who successfully treated him for depression. The work stands today as one of his most beloved compositions. Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii, blind since birth and described as “the definition of virtuosity” (The Observer), brings his phenomenal talent and inimitable technique to Rachmaninoff’s masterpiece. Brahms found Beethoven’s legacy so intimidating that it took him 20 years to compose his first symphony. The work’s soaring melodies and exquisite craftsmanship proved that he was indeed a worthy successor. Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 4 offers a dramatic opener.
