A universal language transcending the ever-shifting cultural landscape of fashion. Relocating oneself in the crossover between familiarity and newness is the blueprint of a story worth sharing.

November 11 – December 14, 2022

Ringling College Galleries Exhibitions presents a curatorial collaboration between its students across various majors. With the aim of bridging generational gaps, the show will introduce a universal language that transcends the ever-shifting cultural landscape of fashion. Inspired by Marie Colbert’s collection, students approach high fashion in the 1960s with a fresh and diverse perspective. This radical collaboration will be presented for the first time in an exhibition titled Head to Toe on view at the Richard & Barbara Basch Gallery as a part of Ringling’s Art Walk.

Head to Toe sees the work of fashion icon Marie Colbert, known for introducing “camouflage” to the industry. Colbert’s collection considers the influences of culture and inclusion over time, taking viewers on a journey wherein familiarity and newness coincide. The space will feature samples by high fashion names such as Oscar De La renta, Donna Karen, Lester Hayatt, Paloma Picasso, Chanel and Ungaro. Considering the plethora of historical anecdotes and journeys each item innately carries, samples of sketches, processes and swatches will be displayed for viewers to sift through.

The week following the opening reception, Fresco – a student-led sustainable fashion show – will draw inspiration from Colbert’s collection by designing complete head-to-toe looks for the runway. Each design will fall under the thematic umbrella of innovation in the fashion world, bringing to life a complete and powerful look that tells its own story.
