Big Jim Allen at Guitar League Saint Petersburg Chapter 4/5/23!

The sixth meeting of Guitar League Saint Petersburg will be on 4/5/23 in the band room at Gibbs High School – sign in at 6:30 pm. We are excited to have performing artist Big Jim Allen as the Main Presenter for the April 5th meeting!

Because of school security, the only entrance to the Gibbs High School campus will be the 31st Street entrance on the back side of the school by the basketball and tennis courts. About our presenter:

Big Jim Allen, a Chicago native now living in the Tampa Bay area since 2005, grew up playing acoustic folk rock, jazz, and classic rock music…from the British Invasion to electric folk-rock and “hippie rock”, to the California singer/songwriter music. With reviews that refer to him as an “all-around entertainer and personality”, Big Jim is best known as a fingerstyle guitarist, versatile multi-instrumentalist, and singer/songwriter…all with a touch of humor. He’s also performed and conducted seminars at festivals and events for a number of years.

To the Guitar League, Big Jim will bring to you an informative and immediately usable set of skills for your live guitar performances. He won’t teach you play the guitar…he will give you some solid tried and true ideas for finetuning your “performing on guitar” in front of live audiences…from simple open mics to small house concerts for your friends.

Big Jim says: “Bring your pad of paper and pencil, sit up front, check your fears or egos at the door (ha-ha), and get some new ideas from someone who’d been on stage since the early 60’s. We will cover: some solo guitar techniques to back your singing, looper ideas, and getting used to microphones and PA’s to be sure that the audience hears you! And if I ask for volunteers, don’t be shy!”

Club details:

The Guitar League meets the 1st Wednesday of each month from 6:30 PM to 9 PM (sign-in & registration at 6:30) at Pinellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High School. The School Board of Pinellas County, FL is neither sponsoring nor affiliated with this event.

At each meeting, the main presenter spends the first 50 minutes sharing a mixture of performing and discussing their craft, something truly unique in the entertainment industry. Next, we take a 20-minute break and then begin the educational portion of our program. When we do breakout sessions, they are designed to fit the varying skill levels (Rookies, Minors, and Majors). Attendees are encouraged to bring their acoustic guitar, capo, and tuner if they have one.

A prospective member’s first meeting is always free to test-drive the organization. Membership is $120/year for 12 monthly meetings ($10/meeting) or $15 per month. Membership includes access to a huge curated library of free online lessons from guitar instruction industry leader Truefire and deep discounts on their All-Access plan. The Saint Petersburg chapter of Guitar League is the tenth chapter of the Syracuse, NY-based organization.
