The Banned Book Club led by Bryn Durgin. February’s selection is “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas.

In this monthly book club dedicated to reading and protecting the most important and threatened books for our generation, February’s pick is Angie Thomas’ The Hate U Give a “stunning, brilliant, gut-wrenching novel that will be remembered as a classic of our time (John Green).”
We will meet in person at our new store location at 117 S. Pineapple Ave. The book club is $15 which includes a copy of The Hate U Give to be picked up at Bookstore1 any time before our meeting.
About The Hate U Give :
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend, Khalil, at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.
Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: What really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.
But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

About Book Bans:
Book bans in public schools have recurred throughout American history, and remain an issue of concern to us at Bookstore1Sarasota. Over the past year, the scope of such censorship has expanded rapidly. In response, PEN America has collated an Index of School Book Bans, offering a snapshot of the trend. The index documents decisions to ban books in school libraries and classrooms in the U.S. from July 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022. Check it out and join us in our efforts to protect free expression and students’ first amendment rights. You can view the index here : https://pen.org/banned-in-the-usa/.
