Returning to The Reserve Retreat, and praised by the Chicago Tribune: “Anne is a singer of glorious gifts” and “Mark is silky smooth and highly polished.” From Paris and Amsterdam to New York, they have delighted audiences the world over with their unique vocal harmonies on jazz, pop, and blues classics.
Singer-songwriter Anne Burnell has been praised as “a singer of glorious gifts,” by the Chicago Tribune and “a fluid, silken voice navigates the various scales with remarkable agility and delightful phrasing” by Chicago Jazz Magazine.
Jonathan Widran, from Jazziz Magazine, called her “one of Chicago’s most versatile live performers,” Anne performs at jazz clubs, concert halls, and festivals in Chicago, throughout the Midwest, as well as Pittsburgh and New York City. From Park West, Auditorium Theatre, University of Chicago’s Jazz at the Logan, to sold-out shows at Andy’s Jazz Club and Davenport’s, to five years at the Taste of Chicago, Anne is one of Chicago’s premier and in-demand female vocalists.
Anne has released two duo CDs with her husband /pianist Mark Burnell, as well as four solo albums. Their first duo album, LITTLE THINGS WE DO TOGETHER resulted in being named “One of the Year’s Ten Best,” by After Dark Chicago. Anne’s acclaimed album BLUES IN THE NIGHT, a centennial tribute to composer Harold Arlen, featured arrangements by Count Basie Band veteran Bob Ojeda. It garnered worldwide airplay on jazz radio and NPR stations in the major markets and hit the Top Ten on the CMJ charts.
Her follow-up album SUMMER DAYS & DREAMY NIGHTS was much more personal. One-third of the album features Anne’s original material including San Juan (which earned her one of two Billboard Magazine Certificate of Achievement in Songwriting Awards), Something I Can Feel, and Right By You, co-written with husband Mark, who also plays piano on seven tracks. The album was produced and arranged by renowned guitarist Henry Johnson, who has recorded and performed with Ramsey Lewis, Nancy Wilson, and Donny Hathaway.
Summer Days earned Anne more critical acclaim with Chicago Jazz Magazine saying, “her supple, honeyed vocals flow along the undulating instrumental refrains of the band with splendid, smooth sophistication….She proves herself, once more, adept at a variety of genres to all of which she brings a jazz musician sensibility.”
Writer Jonathan Widran singled out Anne’s singing, stating “the soulful purity of Anne’s voice also shines through.”
Anne, Mark, and the crew had a great time entertaining at The Reserve Retreat – and the audience loved them!
